I received a letter sent by the “Gran Maestro” that says that my brother Lázaro and myself have been expelled from the Baraw Sugbo.

What an announcement! A stab in the back, as Eduardo’s claim is based on false reasons that sound somewhat weird considering the circumstances ​that preceded this announcement.

I proceed to explain the different points of his statement:

1.- He claims that we have created a different Marketing to Baraw Sugbo.

It must be some 9 years that we have known Eduardo and so it is clear to see on our social media tools i.e. You Tube and Facebook, that we have always used the name and the logo-shield of Baraw Sugbo, up until some 2 years ago when we started to use the original ancient Spanish name of Arnes Diablo. I discussed this personally in Cebu with Eduardo, who was obviously happy with this and also with the logo we were using. We specifically refer to comments he made himself on our social media publications of our events in Paris, Brussels, Portugal, etc where one can clearly read “Great work Lázaro and Jorge”, “Great group”, “Congratulations”, etc. So, why now does he act in this way?

2.-He is condemning the production and commercial rights of the Baraw Sugbo DVD as if they had been done behind his back, yet when this was recorded on the Camotes Islands Eduardo was grateful and eager to see how this production could aid to give the method global exposure. All this was at no cost at all to him as all expenses incurred on Camotes were completely covered i.e. hotels, food ,etc

Therefore on top of receiving 10.000 pesos on the DVD’s and another 15 copies that he himself sold and kept the proceeds, for doing nothing at all I would like to ask him now how can it be that he is condemning this? Where are your values? What kind of a person are you? Or is it that you only show them when you are taking and money is being placed in your hands? So if you are now condemning the DVD then please return the money. We are looking at money and effort that came from us.

3.- Another curios matter is that he is condemning the Certificates that we issue to our pupils. Again, we certainly do not recall any complaints whatsoever when over various years he has gladly received, with a great smile on his face, 5000 pesos from my own hand for such certificates.

What kind of person are you? Where are your values, `Great Master´? Where do the values stand ´Great Master¨? So if you condemn the certificates then please return the monies that came from our pupils’ pockets and that you took, for nothing, without even blinking an eye-lid.

I am very respectful when it comes to work so therefore I will not mention your classes, but I would like all to know now, that we have made you a lot of money year in, year out when we have been training with you and bring new pupils every year in order to try and promote and help you in many ways.

4.- To condemn the seminar I arranged and taught in Manila which everybody must know that Eduardo was aware of that seminar over a week before it took place, we even spoke about it on Messenger (I have the text) and he said absolutely nothing against it or made no alternative proposal. Therefore it would perhaps have been better to have been honest and open and ask me not to do it. As easy as that!

Yet after years of what I considered Friendship he condemns it and we get expelled from the organization. Bravo for the Great Maestro…What kind of a human being are you¿ Where are your values? What you have done is considered to be conduct of a bad person, you must be proud of that.

Another strange one was when I was training with him he knew I was organizing Manila, as he sent to Manila my Instructor certificate and 3 days later he expelled us from his organization, with not even a word.

Such an disrespectful man, before becoming a ‘Gran Maestro’ you should behave first like a man and forget the back-stabbing. The whole of the seminar attendants saw what happened and witnessed the long days patiently. At the Seminar I started talking about the history of the system and I also recommend for everybody to go and train with him in Cebu.

Concluding, we have seen for ourselves what kind of a person Eduardo is, and some egotistical person who is with him, therefore we feel very happy not to belong to this organization at all.

To brothers Lazaro and Jorge Talaya,

Good day if there is even one true good day with you wherever you are.

I am very disappointed by your arrogant response to my letter. I see no need to defend myself against your erroneous and malicious statements; however, I am grateful that you have replied which is an opportunity for me to show how rude and unprofessional you and your brothers can be.Not to mention the harassment you have been doing to me and my family and friends by sending inappropriate and utterly disgusting messages.

You came to Cebu sometime in 2009 to convince me to teach you my family art “Baraw Sugbo” knife oriented system. In the first few years, as trusting as I am, I really thought you were serious in your desire to promote me and my art in Europe. However, you finally showed your true color when you took over the website that was openly offered to me by no less than Bruno Cancho WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. That website carried my name and the official logo of Baraw Sugbo International. For me it was an act of treachery but I managed to stay calm and told Bruno Cancho that if I have no control of the website then you should refrain from using my official name and logo. But you are a sweet talker and managed to convince me that you will use Arnes Diablo as a name for your group and website. I agreed to this compromise given that you were the only foreign group I was relying on during that time to promote me and my family martial art. But later on, I read the following misleading and erroneous comments reflected on social media:

A. “Arnes Diablo is more advanced and combative than Baraw Sugbo.”

B. You claimed that Arnes Diablo followed the Talayas’ methodology. This information was disclosed by some Europeans that trained with me in Cebu.

C. You claimed that the Talayas created the art. As if that were not enough, you also tried to steal the concept of the book “CEBUANO ESKRIMA beyond the Myth” by Ned Nepangue and Celestino Macachor in pages 220-223.

Now, regarding the issue of P10,000.00 pesos and the DVD productions, that money was only a part of your offer and that you would give me 10 copies of the completed DVD. My foremost concern back then was the direction of the video; I was not even thinking about the 10,000 pesos. During that time when we shot the videos, you voluntarily offered to shoulder my expenses going to the shoot location which is in Camotes Island. You included my food and accommodation and I was thankful and accepted your offer.

When the DVD was finished and Bruno Cancho came back to Cebu, he said I will be getting 20 copies of the DVDs and will no longer get the 10,000 pesos. My partner Willy Panal can attest that the P10,000.00 was never given to me. Why are you condemning me about the money that I DID NOT even received? How about the proceeds from the DVDs that you sold since 2013? I did not even get a single peso from those even though I was the one on the DVD.

Why are you now doing a thorough accounting on money you VOLUNTARILY gave me? If I may ask, how much money did you earn by teaching and holding seminars using my art? When I issued and gave you the certificates as an instructor, did I account you for that as well? I did not ask money for those!

Regarding the students you bring to me, I have always thanked you for the referral but I do not owe you anything. I earned what they paid me because I dedicated my service, time, and knowledge in teaching them. Also, why do you give the impression that you gave me so much money? Assuming you gave me 50,000 pesos in total (which is not even close to what I earned from teaching you), what made you think that this is such a phenomenal amount? You are very arrogant in demanding that I return what money you have given me. Assuming that I owed you money for teaching; can you even give me back the knowledge that I taught you, which you in turn taught to your students? It is not going to happen. You threaten me that you will find me when you get to the Philippines, well, I am mostly at my house which I so offered to both of you in the most hospitable way I can. Come and see me here and let us get it on.

Regarding the Arnes Diablo seminar in Manila last year in 2017, you stated that all I have to do was tell you to stop it if I do not like it – but during our training before that event, you never mentioned that! You kept it a secret! Luckily, some of the participants who signed up for the seminar informed me beforehand. When I mentioned it to you on Messenger, you merely replied with: “Yeah, its great promotion for Baraw Sugbo.” I even sent you your certificate assuming that you will need it as proof that you are my certified instructor in Baraw Sugbo. But suddenly I read your irresponsible comment on social media stating, “For those who are interested to learn the art, contact Bong Abenir.” Who is Bong Abenir to Baraw Sugbo? You were just exchanging knowledge with his art for a week. When I reached out to Bong Abenir about the seminar, his reply was, “I am not following the method of Baraw Sugbo. I am following the Talayas’ methodology.” This is the height of your disrespect! That is why many FMA practitioners are condemning your act.

But whatever I say here, I am now sure that your arrogance will not be dissolved easily. I do not owe you any explanations besides the fact that it is pointless arguing with the both of you.

So! To the readers of this reply, let me just state the final statement below:

As the sole heir and head of Baraw Sugbo / Arnes Diablo, I have the authority to give certifications and promotions to deserving students; I also have the right to revoke the certifications of unworthy and disrespectful students. I feel no regret in the expulsion of Lazaro and Jorge Talaya, especially now that I see that they are abhorrent not only as martial artists, but also as human beings. Stay away from them.
